While slot machines are generally considered straight-forward, new players might benefit from a quick course on what they can expect to find.
While they are all fairly similar, there are a number of differences that make for a lot of potential varieties.
How Many Reels There Are:
It's typical to see either 3 or 5 reels on an online slot machine, not unlike at most regular casinos. Due to the flexibility that software games allow,
there are the occasional machines that may have more or less - but you'll generally choose from either 3 or 5.
How Many Lines There Are:
A slot machine can have as few as one payline, with some video slots going as high as 20 of them. Of course, each payline costs more money to play, so
while you'll hit more frequent combinations, it comes with more expensive spins.
The Paytables:
How much money particular combinations pay out is an important consideration as well. How much is the highest payout? Are there a lot of mid-level payouts?
Generally speaking, the higher the average win is, the less frequent they will come up.
Progressive Jackpots:
Progressive Jackpot machines look and play the same as normal slots, but instead of having a fixed payout for the top prize, there is a jackpot amount
that constantly grows as more people play the machine without hitting it. How much the progressive jackpot starts with depends on the machine, and how
large it grows depends on how long it goes without being won.
While the odds of hitting a progressive jackpot are very small, the potential of a massive payoff is alluring to many.
Other variations that can appear on slot machines include:
- Double or nothing machines:
After a win on the machine, there is the option to double or nothing your winnings. You can opt not to take it and simply collect, or take the 50/50 chance.
-
Nudge machines:
These machines have a 'nudge' feature that allows the player to occasionally move a reel forward or backward by one spot, which is sometimes all it takes
to turn around a losing spin.
